Demystifying Sophisticated Web Sites

One of the common factors that puts non-technical folk off revolutionising their web site with a proper CMS (Content Management System) like WordPress is the somewhat bewildering array of settings and options you have at your fingertips.

But what if you don’t have time or inclination to climb such a steep learning curve? Well, the good news is you don’t have to.

There are many extensions (called plugins) to WordPress that enable us to both simplify and customise the editor, contributor or even shop manager experience to suit your needs.

Essentially this means greatly simplifying the administrative screen from something like the one on the left (click for full size) to something far more user friendly that you and your staff can understand at a glance. Remember, the left-hand screenshot shows just a fraction of the controls available (in this instance the main Settings options), but is clearly far more suited to someone with years of WordPress development experience.

In the real world, a good web developer will set up your site in such a way that you only need to focus on everyday tasks like adding new posts and images (essentially company or product news that helps you sell), or adding new products to your shop catalogue. If properly set up and explained with simple tutorials (which you can refer back to if necessary), such tasks are no more difficult than writing an email or filling in a pre-defined form.

If and when you need to do anything more sophisticated, we can either do it for you, and/or show you how to do it yourself for future reference. An example might be adding a new menu or link to a new page on your site. In short, you don’t have to learn everything at once, just do it in easy steps as you become more web savvy.

Alongside this, such plugins allow us to customise the admin screens to reflect your company identity, including the all important log in screens should you wish your customers to interact with your web site, as in the case of an online shop. In our example (again, click for full size) we see this in action, exchanging a rather boring default screen with something instantly recognisable as your company or brand.
